Lorraine Kallman died peacefully on Wednesday, January 11th surrounded by family at Valley Hospital. Born and raised in Jersey City, Lorraine was a proud product of P.S. 25, St. Al’s and Jersey City State College where she majored in Art Education and went on to share that passion teaching art for more than twenty years.
In her own words, Jersey City “was a wonderful place to grow up. It was, and is, a city of great diversity which afforded us the opportunity to have friends of many cultural and religious backgrounds. There were two predominantly Italian neighborhoods, the Downtown and Marion sections of the city. We lived halfway between in “the Heights” with hearts firmly grounded in those other two neighborhoods, where we had all of our family… Our summers were spent in Belmar, at the Jersey Shore, with our cousins visiting for a weekend and staying for weeks.”
“Jerry and I met in 1971 and were married in 1977. Our love has withstood the test of time and many other challenges. It has made us stronger and thankful for the great gift of being together.”
Jerry and Lorraine are together again, but leave behind a family “clan” of 25 children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. When asked to share one word that described “Aunt Lorraine”, “Grandma”, “Oma” this is what they shared – artistic, bright, compassionate, joyous, kind, welcoming, endearing, mischievous, sweet, funny, exuberant, a firecracker, playful, creative, brave, fearless, loving, and selfless.
An active member of the International P.E.O. Sisterhood and the West Bergen Mental Healthcare group, Lorraine was energetically committed to helping local, national, and international communities as her work with West Bergen, Cottey College (Nevada), and the “K-School” in Kenya clearly demonstrated. With her passion and lifestyle of “service above self”, Lorraine’s legacy lives on through the family and friends who will think of her always with warm hearts and smiles.
In lieu of flowers, our family and Lorraine’s legacy would be honored if you would consider a donation to P.E.O. Sisterhood-supported “Cottey College” at this URL: https://cottey.edu/give
