John W. McKeon

May 7, 1946 ~ January 27, 2023 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Tribute

John William McKeon, age 76, of Ridgewood, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023.  He is predeceased in death by his parents, Anthony and Mary (McManus) McKeon; brothers George and David; sister Mary; and grandson Cole McKeon.  He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Joan, sons and daughter Keith, Kevin (Stephanie), Ryan (Alicia), Erin, and Conor; granddaughter Emily; grandson Calvin; brother Dennis; sisters Kathleen and Margaret; as well as 43 nieces and nephews.
Born in Endicott, NY on May 7, 1946, John was one of seven children.  He enjoyed his large family and remained close to all throughout his 76 years.  After serving in the U.S. Army as a Drill Sergeant during the Vietnam War, John entered the seminary with the intention to become a priest.  While he ultimately found another path, his love of God and Church never wavered.  Among the accomplishments in his professional life, John received a doctorate degree from Fairleigh Dickenson University.  He spent his career helping others, mostly in the field of special education where he started one of the first programs for autistic students in the State of New Jersey.  Dr. McKeon was always known for his love of the students he helped provide for and his sense of humor in the office.  In addition to his work in special education, John spent evenings as a marriage counselor in Wyckoff, NJ.
John's great love outside of the home became more apparent when he was ordained a Deacon in 1999.  Faithfully serving the Parish of St. Lukes, John baptized countless children, married just as many couples, ran prayer groups, bible studies, and pre-cana.  He will forever be remembered by his use of props and singing during his homilies.
While always on the go serving others, nothing was ever as important as his love and dedication to his wife, children, and grandchildren.  Coaching soccer, Saturday morning breakfasts with each child taking a turn, camping at Guestward Ho, and attempts to get his children to golf, with mixed results, were among many of his joys.  John led his family with his calm demeanor, patience, and an unwavering moral compass that will ever guide us.
